See-through car window sign, often called one-way vision signs, are a type of signage that is designed to be applied on glass surfaces, such as vehicle windshield or side-windows, store windows, doors or partitions. They are made from perforated vinyl that allows the sign to be visible from one side while still allowing light to pass through from the other side.
The transparent material of the signs gives the appearance of an opaque design to onlookers while still allowing light to enter the vehicle. Additionally, because of their one-way-vision material, those inside the vehicle can easily see what is happening outside, whereas those outside the vehicle cannot see the interior environment.
How Does One-way Vision Work?
Naturally, the human eye tends to notice brighter colors over darker colors. Since the perforated one-way vision film contains areas of printed graphics and an unprinted see-through portion covering 50 to 85% of the sign, the holes where there is no film or ink look generally darker and almost black.
When someone, during the day, looks at the windshield or side-window of a vehicle from the outside, their eye is drawn to the printed image, as it reflects more light than the perforated see-through area, which looks like it is on a solid piece of vinyl.
However, if you view from the inside, you will see the outside world through the holes. The secret here is that the printed graphics on the outside become invisible thanks to a black backing that covers only the printed areas of the vinyl without blocking the unprinted portion.
